Community spirit helps light up Gowkthrapple

Christmas sparkle arrived in Gowkthrapple this week – thanks to a team effort from all the partners involved in the area’s regeneration.

The Christmas tree lights were switched on at an event on Friday 28 November organised by Garrion People’s Housing Co-operative (GPHC), with carols performed by pupils from Clyde Valley High School and Castlehill and St Thomas’ Primary Schools and attended by local elected members, community groups and residents. The tree itself was donated by Dawn Homes, the developer currently building the first phase of a major new housing development planned for Gowkthrapple at the Castlehill Grove site.

And there was a special visit by Santa Claus who joined the celebrations to meet local children and hear their Christmas wish lists!

North Lanarkshire Council is co-ordinating a multi-million pound Masterplan to regenerate Gowkthrapple, including the creation of a Community Hub which will include accommodation for GPHC and the Council’s housing services as well as internet access, a café, retail provision, meeting rooms and a multi-purpose room which can be utilised by the local community. It is hoped the new Community Hub will be a landmark project to benefit current and future Gowkthrapple residents.

The Masterplan was developed by the council in partnership with Garrion People’s Housing Cooperative and the local community to deliver a vibrant, sustainable community to the area.

The Council and GPHC carried out a postal survey of local residents to find out their views on the new community facility and what services it should provide. An excellent response was received and the feedback from the survey is being used to develop detailed plans for the Community Hub. During the Christmas lights event, a draw was made from all the completed surveys and prizes presented to two residents. The prizes were donated by North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd and Motherwell Football Club.
